Volunteering To Help At Galas

Prior to a gala Swim Ulster will ask each club to provide a number of volunteers to assist with the running of the gala (the number of volunteers requested will be in proportion to the number of swimmers the club has entered). If a club does not fulfill this request then that club's swimmers may not be allowed to compete! Searching for volunteers on the day of the gala will also mean delays starting! The assistance of parents is essential (usually approx 40 officials are needed for each session of a gala).

A list of volunteer requests will be posted on the website prior to each gala. Please, please respond to that request!

IF YOUR CHILD IS SWIMMING IN THE GALA THEN ONE FAMILY MEMBER IS EXPECTED TO VOLUNTEER IN ONE SESSION OF THE GALA.

The following are a list of jobs & brief descriptions of what the jobs involve:

No training required for the following volunteer jobs -

Timekeeper: 2 timekeepers in each lane use stopwatches to accurately record the time of each swimmer. Electronic timing is also used & if you miss starting your stopwatch you raise your hand & there is always an extra timekeeper at the side of the pool who will then record the time for you.

Gala Secretary: you are requested to be at the computer desk approx 25mins before the gala starts. You are responsible for checking that all the various club volunteers have signed in (& find them if they have not).

Marshall: put the swimmers in lines according to which race is next & check that no-one is missing!

Announcer: announce each race (probably a job we all prefer not to do but someone has to do it!)

Computer Helper: assist with the input of all swimmers times after each race.

Larne Coach Assistant: assist the Larne poolside coach with paperwork, splits etc.

Training required for the following volunteer jobs:

Turn Judge

Stroke Judge

Starter

Fund Raising

In addition to swimmer's fees the Club needs to raise funds in order to pay for hire of training pools etc. Rather than increase fees to the level required to meet these costs the Club endeavours to organise various fund raising events throughout the season.
